The SoulsINQUEST Photography exhibition opens at the 198 Gallery on Friday 12 May and will run until Saturday 27 May at 198 Railton Road, SE24 0JT. Opening times: Monday - Tuesday (by appointment), Wednesday - Sunday, 11am to 5pm.

"The soul of our loved one lives forever in our hearts and memories, which will never die" - Marcia Rigg (Participant and Family Campaigner)

SoulsINQUEST uses photography and writing as a lens onto the history of state violence, death, grief and resistance. The exhibition is an embodiment of family resistance that refuses to be silenced, misrepresented or forgotten. A collaboration between bereaved families, Sarah Booker, INQUEST and curated by Languid Hands, it is a public reflection of family voice in the fight for justice.

The Venue: 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning

Founded in 1988, 198’s approach is framed by its local communities and the history of the Brixton uprisings from which they sprang.

Contribute to the digital project: #SoulsINQUEST

Submit photographs, memories or a short (15-30 second) video about your loved one who has died at the hands of the state. Running alongside the physical SoulsINQUEST exhibition, these connected photograph projects are about taking control of your own stories and challenging the harmful and misleading public assertions made about your loved ones.

Please note, you don’t need to have been supported by INQUEST to engage in this project, this is for anyone who’s relative or friend has died in state-related settings (prison, police, mental health, immigration detention).

40 Years Commemorative Family Banner

Families who have been supported by INQUEST are invited to contribute a square to the quilt-style banner that will depict four decades of loss, grief and the fight for change. This banner will be exhibited as part of an exhibition this year, photographs of it will be archived and it will be taken to protests, such as the United Families and Friends Campaign annual rally.
