Important Additional Information
The main difference in all future support grant rounds (compared to round one) is that grants will not  generally be awarded/issued on a rolling basis, but rather final decisions will be made after any given funding round has closed.

The exception to the above conditions will be if it is confirmed by an Assessment Partner that the requested need is significantly urgent.

Applicants only register once. If you have done so in the past you DO NOT need to register again.
  • Types of grants available!

We currently have two core* and two supplementary funding programmes!

  • Who qualifies for grants?

An individual / representative / campaign group acting on behalf of family members and / or friends of someone that has died in suspicious circumstances either following police contact or custody, in prison, mental health or immigration institutions in the UK.

Affected families (active or not, past or present) can apply to the National Memorial Family Fund.

Potential applicants should note that their campaign groups must be active (if applicable), UK-based and financially independent of any private company or enterprise, funded organisation or registered charity to be eligible.  You should also register on this website.

An individual / representative / campaign group that is actively donating at least £2 p/month to the Family Fund appeal are likely to receive a higher priority when available funds are limited.

  • Who does not qualify for grants?

The National Memorial Family Fund will not support applications from any combination of the following:

    • Previous successful applicants that have not provided feedback as required (some flexibility will be applied on a case-by-case basis)
    • Campaigns not representing UK custody death victims
    • Individuals not directly linked to an active / known UK-based family campaign group, or that has not been specifically nominated by a family or family member to act on their behalf
    • Groups not made up of family members and / or friends of someone that has died in state custody
    • Organisations or family campaign groups already funded from some other source(s)
    • Individuals or family campaign groups that have received a grant from the National Memorial Family Fund within the last 4 months prior to a new application (Grants will however be considered in a highly critical time of need)
  • Registration & applications!

    Firstly, make sure you're registered

You only have to register once - we'll then send you a permanent unique campaign reference number (CRN). You should make a careful note of this for future reference - it's like a 'passport' to our grants and future services.

    The Crisis Family Fund

This is a fund that will always be open for applications (subject to available resources) in-between the standard grant rounds programme which is intermittent.

This is a fast-track process for urgent requests only. Family Fund Assessment Partners will largely drive the application process, with quick decisions made by our administrative team.

The first stage of the current process (registration and grant limits) will still apply, but from that point forward there is a simple endorsement form that Assessment Partners will submit to the Memorial Family Fund - and that's it!

    The Family Support Fund

The National Memorial Family Fund will open this stream for applications intermittently, and details will be provided on the 4WardEver UK & Mikey Powell Campaign websites / social networks / newsletters etc, and will also be provided to our assessment partners in advance.

There is no complex application form required to apply to the National Memorial Family Fund, provided that your campaign / group meets the basic criteria set out above.

You should first make contact with one of our Assessment Partners (see the 'Quick Guide' page for details). They will assist you with your online application should you need help.

  • The 6-step guide!

Here are the key steps regardless of which funding programme is applied to:

Step1: Applicant registers (One-time / Lifetime) and chooses an Assessment Partner. You may use a different partner for each future application if you wish.

Step2: Family Fund confirms registration with the Applicant and copies this to an Assessment Partner.

Step3: Applicant and Assessment Partner make contact to discuss needs / progress to the next step.

Step4: Assessment Partner consults Applicant and either party submits an application (verification of consultation with Assessment Partner is required). Crisis Fund conditions apply

Step5: Family Fund contacts applicant and Assessment Partner with a decision.

Step6: Family Fund contacts Assessment Partner and applicant for grant feedback (within 3 months).

  • Can you apply more than once?

The short answer is 'yes', but there are some conditions that apply:

    • Individuals or family campaign groups can only re-apply to the Family Support Fund 4 months after a previous grant was awarded
    • New: If you have received a grant more than twice in the last 3 funding rounds, other applicants may be given a higher priority, and you might not receive an award during this round
    • Previous successful applicants that have not provided feedback as required won't be eligible
    • In cases of urgent need our Crisis Family Fund (launched in March 2021) is available. This is a quick-turnaround process through our Assessment Partners

Further details of the Crisis Family Fund are available on the Applications Process page.

  • Online applications!

We prefer ALL applications submitted online. The application form includes the following information:

    • Your unique campaign reference number (provided when you register)
    • A brief overview of the person(s) your campaign / group was established for
    • The names of no more than four (4) members actively involved in your campaign / group
    • A main contact name, email, telephone number and postal address
    • How much are you asking for
    • Name of payee (for cheques / payments)
    • What you need the funds for and how those funds will be managed
    • How the funds will benefit the affected family members or the work of your campaign / group

Please state your acceptance that the National Memorial Family Fund would require some basic feedback about how any funds awarded were used.

  • How are applications assessed?

4WardEverUK is the primary assessor. Application Assessment Partners in various locations will:

    • Consider grant requests against a simple set of agreed criteria
    • Recommend grants up to a pre-determined maximum (£50 to £250)
    • Make a formal request for the consideration of grants to 4WardEverUK’s Final Assessment Panel
    • Encourage the applicants feedback (where possible) on the use of any grants awarded

We will ensure that the application process is kept as simple as possible for those applying to ensure they are not burdened with yet more bureaucracy at a time that is in itself already difficult.

The Final Assessment Panel would consider applications based on:

    1. The urgency of need expressed via local Assessment Partner panels

    2. Where an application sits in the waiting list (by date of receipt)

    3. The resources available within the fund at any given time

  • How much funds are granted?

Grants will generally be between £50 to a maximum of £250 (more may be awarded at our discretion dependent upon the need identified). Some grants awarded may be less than the amount requested dependent on available funds we hold at any given time.

Applications will only be opened when the National Memorial Family Fund holds a balance between £5,000 and £6,500 at any given time. This is to ensure sufficient funds are available.

See Useful Resources

The National Memorial Family Fund is the first permanent national resource of its kind specifically for those affected by deaths and killings in custody or state neglect, making small grants available for families and their campaign groups across the UK to provide practical domestic assistance and campaign support. We also run (or are developing) a range of other support services for families, children and young people that are affected.

The Fund is already making a real difference for families and campaign groups that need financial support during their long struggles for justice lasting for decades in many cases.
